PIONEER: Gustave Eiffel University strengthens its European doctoral program

Training researchers capable of meeting the challenges of sustainable cities: this is one of the ambitions of the European PIONEER Alliance. At Gustave Eiffel University, this ambition is being realized through the launch of three theses under international joint supervision or co-direction.

This initiative is supported by funding from the French National Research Agency (ANR) as part of the France 2030 program. This support complements the alliance's European funding and helps strengthen several key initiatives, including the development of international doctoral programs.

Research aligned with SDG 11

The three contracts are being developed in partnership with members of the PIONEER Alliance: two theses under joint supervision with ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, and one thesis under joint supervision with AVANS University of Applied Sciences.

The projects, all rooted in Sustainable Development Goal 11 (“Sustainable Cities and Communities”), focus on:

  • bio-based polymer materials for acoustic and thermal applications in buildings;
  • the effects of air pollution on urban populations;
  • Contributions of generative artificial intelligence for the detection of critical events in the driving  of an electric two-wheeler.

The topics were selected according to demanding criteria (SDG 11 focus, PIONEER co-supervision, HDR supervision) and disseminated across Europe via Euraxess and partner networks.

A growing European dynamic

An additional thesis co-funded by the University of Huelva has already been confirmed and will be carried out under joint supervision with Gustave Eiffel University.

As coordinator of the PIONEER Alliance, Gustave Eiffel University confirms its ability to transform European cooperation into concrete opportunities for doctoral training and international scientific visibility.
